About The College of Esports

The College of Esports (CoEs) are the World’s first university-level institution dedicated to Esports. They are the world-first educational institution with an exclusive relationship with the British Esports, and CoEs is the only esports related institution dedicated to making the esports industry sustainable. The College has combined the impressive facilities and strategic location of the Velodrome at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with strong links with esports personnel, British Esports and organisations at local, regional, national, and international levels.

The Challenge

Being the world-first education institution with an exclusive relationship with the British Esports, and the only institution dedicated to making esports sustainable, the college set its eyes on a venue that could handle large crowds for esports events and be somewhere that could rapidly grow as the college did. Most esports events use stadiums for their venues, so the Lee Valley VeloPark stood out to the CoEs team.

The issue with being a sporting venue, is that traditionally there is not a focus on IT requirements and is often noted that WiFi coverage is poor, the internet is slow and user experience is often sub-par. The soon-to-be lecture rooms, Desktop PC gaming rooms and student social zone had little to no WLAN or LAN accessibility.

There were also other issues that quickly became apparent. CoEs needed an IT system to manage their students logins, single sign on to college computers and student learning environments, while all being easily manageable.

The Solution

After being recommended by another organisation to CoEs, Aspgate was chosen to supply, install and configure, Firewalls, Switches, Access Points, Servers, Desktop PCs and Laptops across the entire site.

CoEs required an end-to-end, ground up solution. The requirement being state of the art, high speed, low latency, highly resilient and scalable infrastructure to deliver industry leading courses in esports and provide an immersive gaming experience via high-end gaming desktops.

To achieve this, Aspgate deployed a sub-milisecond fibre network spanning across the college campus, installing Ubiquiti WiFi 6 Access Points, 10GB switches and FortiGate firewalls.

After the network was installed, Aspgate deployed the end user devices into the campus, which consisted of Desktop PCs and the software required for those, alongside laptops and the software required for those lecturers.

Aspgate built a domain to manage all users and PCs, fully managing all aspects of user account creation, remote assistance and providing expert support to staff and students.

Key Outcomes

  • Deployed a scalable, low latency and highly resilient network.
  • Installed a WiFi 6 wireless network to provide seamless connectivity across the campus.
  • Configured and installed domain joined desktops and laptops with licensing and required software
  • Complete outsourced management of users and computers to Aspgate Service Desk
  • Proactive monitoring of the entire campus network
  • Devices maintained in line with Cyber Essentials.

The Feedback

“The College of Esports (CoEs) relies on high end technology to deliver a truly unique experience to its students, so it was vital that CoEs partnered with an organisation that had in-depth knowledge and a thorough understanding of what we wanted to achieve. Aspgate expertly planned, configured and installed our infrastructure in an incredibly short turnaround time, satisfying our complete requirements. We’re looking forward to continuing to work with Aspgate for all our IT demands.”
